Going outside of job descriptions...where growth happens!
Sales Team

In many organizations, it is frowned upon or even forbidden to spend time working on projects that do not neatly align with the formal job description.  At TrippNT, we encourage it - if it benefits the employee's development and supports our business.

Some examples recently

  • A Fabrication Specialist serving as our spokesperson in product videos
  • A cross-departmental team forming a social media team
  • Our CEO and HR Director stepping in as temporary chefs to maintain our food service
  • Our Director of Engineering creating videos in support of our marketing efforts

The Core Responsibilities Remain in Most Cases

These opportunities never come at the expense of the business, but rather are  balanced with current responsibilities.

 Trying Something New

Recently, TrippNT had an urgent need for help with Graphic Arts in Marketing. An employee stepped up who was interested - but not sure their skills were current. In this case, the employee stepped AWAY from their current responsibilities as a Shipping Specialist - and dove into the role to see if it was a fit.

It turned into a win-win! The employee was promoted to a new role and the marketing quality improved.

 What If It Doesn't Work?

Trying new things always carries a risk that an employee might not enjoy the work or excel at it. There has to be room for the employee to safely return to their original roles if the new venture doesn't work out.

 Conclusion

Stepping outside a job description can seem daunting, but the rewards far outweigh the risks. By fostering innovation, enhancing skill sets, building relationships, increasing job satisfaction, and aligning with organizational goals it can exponentially increase success in today’s ever-evolving workplace.

Have you stepped outside your own job description? What impact did it have?  We'd love to hear about it! Email us at lean@trippnt.com.
